This is an activity that will keep you fit and allow you to do some fundraising for a good cause at the same time! The money you raise as a group will be split between ‘Water Aid’ and ‘SNAPPY’.
Essentials for this challenge are a reasonable physical stamina, some ready cash and massive commitment!
Your challenge as a group will be to :
‘Row across the North Sea and back’
over the Wednesday afternoons of a school term. (446 miles / 718 km) The group will use the rowing machines at GLL gym, and the digital read-out of the distance you row each week will be logged by an assigned member of the gym staff. (This activity will be overseen by a member of the school staff, who will be based at Water World for the ‘swim challenge’)
However, in order to complete the distance, over approximately 12 Wednesday sessions, we will organise you into pairs with one student rowing for 15 mins and one resting for 15 mins - you will each need to row 3000 metres per 15 min session and be able to keep this pace up for 1½ hours continuously in order to complete this challenge as a group in one term……. not one for the ‘faint-hearted gym posers’ amongst you!
Now for the fundraising bit……. You will be required to gain a minimum of £10 in sponsorship IN ADVANCE of the challenge. Money must be raised and collected ‘up front’ and handed to the designated member of staff at school, before you take up the challenge.
There is also a weekly £1.50 reduced entry fee for the gym payable upon entrance – you will also need to show a ‘Huntington Pass’ (issued in advance)
A chance to get physically fit and help others at the same time – the perfect activity – are you up for it?
Coordinator: Mrs Richardson / Gym Staff
Where: Gll Leisure Gym
When: Wednesday afternoon (make your own way to Courtneys Gym ready to register with staff member and start rowing from 1.30; punctuality essential)
How long: One term
