COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an exciting yet demanding course that enables students to explore real business situations and understand the role of the entrepreneur and business in society. You will have the opportunity to meet with and visit people from local business community and you will gain an insight into the main areas of business through case studies, role plays, discussions and visits.

 

COURSE CONTENT

AS UNITS:

Unit 1

(1 hour written paper - 40% of total AS)

This unit covers the challenges and issues of starting a business, including financial planning and looking at entrepreneurs and enterprises.

Unit 2

(1 ½ hours written paper - 60% of total AS)

This explores the key internal functions of business and how the management of these functions can improve the business performance. Students will study Marketing, Finance, Operations Management and People e.g. motivation and recruitment.

A2 UNITS:

Unit 3

(1 ½ hours written paper with a range of numerical data - 25% of total A Level marks)

This specification considers strategies for larger businesses and includes looking at marketing strategies, location decisions, accounts and human resource strategies.

Unit 4

(1 ½ hours written paper and essay - 25% of total A Level marks)

In this unit students will study the economic, political, legal end ethical environment; plus how a business can plan for and manage change including leadership styles.

 

CAREER POSSIBILITIES

A GCE in Business Studies opens up many opportunities to study at degree level in Business, Management Studies, Accounting and Finance, Human Resources and Marketing. It also provides a good grounding for careers in banking, accounting, retail management and human resource management.

 

GCSE GRADE PROFILE

Students who study this subject will normally have achieve A* - C grades in a range of subjects. It is not necessary to have studied GCSE Business Studies. A grade B in Maths and English is preferable.
