Course Description
This is a challenging and varied course where students develop their experience and knowledge of theatre, text and live performance. Students will learn theatre skills from the perspective of Director, Designer and Performer. Elements of theatre history and key practitioners are also studied, developing both theoretical and practical knowledge of theatre practice. There are many opportunities to see live performances and to work practically with others. The annual London trip enhances the course considerably as students work with professional theatre practitioners and performers.
Course Content
AS Units:
Unit 1-Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play (1 hour 30 minutes).
The exam requires students to evaluate a particular element of a live theatre performance. They will also write a response to a set play studied during the course.
Unit 2- Presentation of an Extract from a Play
Students work in small groups and perform an extract of a published play. An integral aspect of this assessment is the submission of detailed supporting notes.
A2 Units:
Unit 3-Further Prescribed Plays including Pre-Twentieth Century (2 hours)
Study of two further set plays one of which requires a complete stage realisation of a short extract that is printed in the exam paper
Unit 4-Presentation of Devised Drama
Working in small groups, students devise and perform a piece of theatre. It will be inspired by an element of the course content, but created wholly by the group.
Career Possibilities
An Advanced Level in Drama and Theatre Studies is recognised as an academic qualification and will therefore lead to any university route. The course develops fluent written skills, self-confidence, independent thinking, teamwork, tact and diplomacy. All are invaluable in whatever field a student may choose post-18. If you are aiming for a career in theatre then this qualification is an excellent starting point. We encourage students to be fully involved in the many extra-curricular opportunities here at Huntington; as performers, directors and technical support. We have built excellent relationships with local theatres, youth groups and universities. Students have benefited from work experience, advice, contacts and support from these links.
GCSE Grade Profile
Students who study this subject will normally achieve A* to C grades at GCSE in a range of subjects including Drama and English Literature. Although GCSE Drama is not absolutely necessary to take this A Level, you do need a pass of B or above at GCSE English.
