On the 11th of December the first meeting of the new environmental council started. A handful of students and teachers came to the meeting, where Mr Hughes became the chairman of the council. Mr Poole our premises manager lead the meeting, and we also now have a blogger for the council, Haris Lloyd.
Quick to propose things, Rosie Bonser suggested a logo/badge for the environmental council, in the not so near future a competition will happen, meaning that people can design a badge for the environmental council and a winner will be selected. An audit of the school was conducted on Friday the 17th of December to find out where our energy usage was coming from, the results will be revealed in the next meeting of the council. If you would like to be involved please sign up in the careers library.
Also in the not too distant future there will be a trial of recylcing bins around the school for a period of two weeks, the two new bins being for plastic bottles and paper/cardboard. During the meeting a conclusion was met, that said reminder stickers for lights and switches to be turned off, don't work. The environmental council would like to ask pupils and staff to switch of all non-essential lighting and switches at any time when they are not needed. I would also like to say that I have had to turn off the light outside Mr Price's classroom quite a few times (please keep this particular switch under close watch!).
The 12-18th of March this year will be climate week. If you have any suggestions what we can do that week envrironmentaly related please contact either Mr Hughes or Mr Poole. A very funny suggestion was to put a toll on the car park at school, which would either encourage teachers to use friendlier transport, or contribute to school funds...the identity of this suggester will be kept secret for safety reasons. Another topic brought up at the meeting was chickens and wormeries to reduce our food wastage (just ideas still, we dont have chickens yet).
If you have any more ideas or contributions to the schools environmental council, please just mention it to any member of the council, your ideas will be received gratefully or sign up in the careers library. I would like to thank all the people who came to the meeting for their contribution and support. (There were no year eights or Cook house people at the meeting, please if you fit into one of these categories or both, and would like to help please contact Mr Poole).
On a final note ,a friendly reminder to all users of the school grounds to turn off switches, taps, all uneccesary energy conumers and don’t litter on school grounds please.
Thank you for reading this article and I hope you will read the next ones coming up.
