COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students who are committed to following a vocational pathway may choose to study this subject for a second A Level.
COURSE CONTENT
AS (DOUBLE) UNITS:
Unit 4: Child Development
(1 hour 30 minutes exam)
Topics such as growth, development, factors affecting development, health and safety and the importance of play are investigated.
Unit 5: Nutrition and Dietetics
(1 hour 30 minutes exam)
Students investigate nutrients in food, a balanced diet, dietary and nutritional needs, dietary variations and food preparation.
Unit 7 Needs and Provision for Elderly Clients
This coursework unit involves in-depth conversations with an elderly person in order to be able to describe their needs, the services provided to meet the needs and a comparison of their life aged 0 - 25 with your own experiences.
A2 UNITS:
Unit 13: The Role of Exercise in Maintaining Health and Well-being
(2 hour exam)
Exercise related fitness, its benefits; monitoring, safety and disease prevention are investigated through looking at exercise programmes.
Unit 16: Early Years Education
This coursework investigation looks at all aspects of early years education. Two learning topics are planned and presented with the resources.
Unit 17: Understanding Mental disorder
The coursework examines two mental disorders looking into causes, effects on behaviour and experience, approaches to treatment and attitudes.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
The Double Award Health and Social Care is an excellent preparation for anyone considering higher education at degree or diploma level in a wide range of related courses such as Nursing, Social Policy, Social Studies, Sociology, Psychology and Teaching. Alternatively, students may move directly into employment where they may continue to gain qualifications via the NVQ route.
GCSE GRADE PROFILE
Students who choose this subject will typically achieve mainly grades between A-C with a minimum of 5 Cs. Previous experience of Health and Social Care is not required.
