Health & Social Care (Single Award)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a vocational course which provides opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin the health, social care and early years sectors.  The course is assessed through coursework and examinations.

COURSE CONTENT

AS UNITS:

Unit 1: Effective Caring

(1 hour 30 minutes exam)

This unit looks at factors which affect quality of life, caring skills and techniques, and Health and Social Care services.

Unit 2: Effective Communication

Students investigate the skills needed to communicate with one particular group of people of their choice. Assessment is based on a presentation explaining these skills.

Unit 3: Health, Illness and Disease

Students are assessed on the basis of two reports - one on screening and one on immunisation; and a questionnaire on health, ill-health and the factors that affect health and well-being.

A2 UNITS:

Unit 11: Working in Health and Social Care

This is a coursework unit that affords the opportunity to investigate two different job roles in depth.

Unit 12: Human Development: Factors and Theories

(2 hour exam)

This tested unit examines the factors that affect development and looks into cognitive and personality theories.

Unit 15: Clients with Disabilities

(2 hour exam)

Defining disability and looking at causes and various conditions help to develop an awareness of the issues associated with disability.

 

CAREER POSSIBILITIES
Healt
h and Social Care is an excellent preparation for anyone considering higher education at degree or diploma level in a wide range of related courses such as Nursing, Social Policy, Social Studies, Sociology, Psychology and Teaching. Alternatively, students may move directly into employment where they may continue to gain qualifications via the NVQ route.

GCSE GRADE PROFILE

Students who choose this subject will typically achieve mainly grades between A-C with a minimum of 5 Cs.  Previous experience of Health and Social Care is not required.
