VMW – Volunteerings Most Wanted

Following a voluntary action day in which all year 9 pupils got to try volunteering the volunteering committee was formed. This committee guides the volunteering projects and initiatives in the school giving student voice and influence to all aspects of voluntary action at Huntington.

The committee is called Volunteerings Most Wanted and is made up of 8 of the most enthusiastic and dedicated students, Nathan Bargate, Ellie Gibbon, Vanessa Jordan, Hannah Linaker, Harry Luck, Charles Merritt, Vee Reeves and Kate Twiddle.

The V Files

The V files are a volunteering bulletin that goes out to all classes during morning registration every week. It contains the latest opportunities for students to volunteer both within school and in the local community. It also celebrates the volunteering action of students.

School Grounds

Last year each house was allocated an area of the school to transform, improve and make their mark on. Many students took part and spent the day during the summer term clearing, building, painting and planting. At the end of the day the areas were judged by Mr Tomsett and Johnson house were awarded £50 for making the biggest impact.

This year each house is responsible for their areas and needs to arrange for the upkeep and development of the areas.

Bronte are hoping to complete and mount some art work, Cook are aiming to paint the staff bike sheds, Johnson would like to install a roofing structure and Wilberforce are hoping to build some seating.

So watch this space for the latest developments.

Growing

Following on from the success of the school grounds project we wanted to capture some of the enthusiasm for cultivating, improving and growing and so a gardening team of volunteers have claimed 4 raised beds within the school grounds and are going to clear them in order to grow veg for the school kitchen. Watch out for the produce of this project.

Buddies

Huntington have been working closely with our feeder primary schools, Robert Wilkinson, Stockton on the Forest, Huntington, Yearsley Grove and Haxby Road to ease the transition of pupils from primary to secondary.

This has involved a variety of events including visits, subject days and  lot of work from Mrs Naish and from all this work a golden 100 were identified who needed a bit more help.

We then asked all the Year 7’s and 8’s who would like to volunteer to help out the upcoming year 7’s. They underwent a selection process of interviews and training and they are now our Buddies.

The buddies, now in years 8 and 9 are paired with one or two of the year7’s and are responsible for checking how they are getting on in their first term at secondary school.

Year 8

As VMW are now in Year 11 they are in the process of recruiting new members and inspiring the next generation of volunteering leaders within Huntington. They themselves have chosen to target Year 8 and are looking at training them up to take over, we will keep you updated with what’s happening.
